The Karnala Chronicles: A deep dive into our resident birds

Note: This was a day trip and we had 0 lifers. Unlike my ‘Namdapha, Mishmi, Dihing’ trip blogs I am mentioning every bird, not only lifers. I have been to Karnala 16 times before so I am experienced with the hotspot and know the bird micro-hotspots. The Early Birds As our car arrived at karnala we took the tickets and entered the sanctuary. We went in and immediately saw the Brown Cheeked Fulvetta even before we could glance a Bulbul on the Hariyal Trail. We took a few steps further and saw a White Bellied Drongo on a tree. While we were observing the Drongo an Indian Grey Hornbill flew overhead while calling relentlessly. While looking at the Fulvettas we saw a Black Naped Monarch female in the mix. Then after some walking we realized that there was a White Rumped Shama and we saw it while it tried to hide in the bushes right next to a dried stream. We then saw an Oriental Magpie Robin on the rocks of the dried stream. The Deciduous Forests As we entered Karnala’s...

Namdapha-Mishmi-Dehing: A Trip of a Lifetime, Grand Birding Experience-Part 4

Trip Summary This trip was an exploration through Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for birdwatching. I visited these states during late April 2026 during peak season for Mishmi Hills and Dihing-Patkai National Park. We visited 3 bird hotspots (Namdapha National Park, Dihing-Patkai National Park and Mishmi Hills) and saw quite a few birds between the hotspots. This blog is about my trip and how the birding went. In the trip I saw 40 lifers which boosted me to 721 bird species observed in India, the rarest being the Silver Backed Needletail. Sec-D: Dehing-Patkai National Park and Elephant Reserve As we took our open-gypsy out and descend into the forests, we heard a Hainan Blue Flycatcher almost immediately. We started looking for it and eventually found it. I was surprised to see robin-like behaviour in flycatchers but maybe they do behave like that, they might just hide it. Next up, we did a difficult trek through forest streams and slippery leaves with massive leeches and steep ...

Part-3: The Mishmi Hills, Sec-2 As we woke up, we started the day early. However, it was raining beyond Chikopani bridge (on the way to high-altitude Mayudiya pass) and we decided to not go above Tiwari Gaon the whole day. We left camp and went to Tiwari Gaon and kept venturing around a similar altitude and we saw a Rufous Faced Warbler. A bird which I thought was a bit weird because all the Abroscopus Warblers look very different, unlike the P...

Part-2: The Mishmi Hills We reached from Namdapha in the afternoon and decided to take a 15-minute break and rest at our stay Frogmouth Camp before departing out for birding. We left and almost immediately heard the White Breasted Parrotbills calling. We had to take a stop and view the flock as I surprisingly did not see the parrotbills last time I came to Mishmi and this time we found the Parrotbills, Minlas and Beautiful Nuthatches. While ob...

Namdapha is also the first place where I saw a Wren-Babbler before it got renamed (Spotted Elachura and the Cupwings). Our stay was at Deban Camp, a government property in the center of dense jungle. When we arrived from Dibrugarh ...
